Statement of intent
I aim to produce a website of work demonstrating my ideas, creative work and reflection based around the theme of 'conflict'. At the end of my product I will choose my best photographs and place them on my website so they can be viewed easily.
For my initial research I will start by looking into conflict photographers. At the moment I have only one photographer in mind that I want to look up. He is called Pete Muller. I choose Pete Muller because he's an amazing photographer that captures conflict that I can gain a lot of inspiration from for my own work. I looked into one of Pete's powerful conflict image which is all about poverty. I choose this photographer because he displays different ways of looking at conflict and the poverty found within.
When I was given the theme, my initial thoughts were more strongly towards poverty and bullying as I thought I could explore these better. After thinking about the project title more thoroughly I realise there are so many routes for my work to go down such as child abuse, discrimination, violence and environment with conflict.
To show progression through my work I will start by photographing the basic scenes of our backyard at school. I will then develop these images further by taking more ideas from them and editing them. I then hope to venture from within Stretford high school to larger places such as Manchester.I already have a lot of ideas running through my head for this project which will propel me in the right direction.
I would like to experiment with a wide range of techniques within my work. I would like to try use a fisheye lens to see the effects that I can create with it. I will also try to push myself to be more creative within photoshop to touch up my images. I will also definitely experiment with using both colour and black and white photography.
I have six weeks to produce my product of work towards a production of my final piece. I am to complete my initial research within the first week and start photographing by the second week in order to give me the time I need to show progression. I will then have an eight hour practical exam where I will print and mount my final photos.
As my project progresses I would use annotations throughout my product labelling my ideas and development clearly. This will also help me to reflect on the work I produce. I will mainly seek advice from my teachers and my peers on how to make my work better, as I’m always aiming to push myself to new levels and I believe these are the people to go to. After the creation of my final piece I will write a final evaluation on the project as a whole, reflecting on what went well and what I could do differently or change given the time.

Context
"UNICEF saves children’s lives, defends there rights, and helps them fulfil their potential. We never give up. UNICEF, for every child. Every two seconds, a child takes his or her first breath in a conflict zone. Among refugee and migrant children on the move, the risks to new-borns and mothers are especially acute. Worldwide, more than 16 million babies were born into conflict this year".(This was researched) |
Composition
The focus point in this picture is eye level. I think the person who took the picture did this to show that they don't have a lot of power and to show they don't have less then the rest of us. They have used a triangle with a diagonal line from down to up to draw us in to the mans suffering face. The lighting is harsh to show the grim conditions they are travelling through. They have used rule of thirds were one third is mud and one third is sky this shows the horrible conditions they have had to go through. They are right in the foreground of the picture that close its like you could reach out to them.
Connection
The picture is about refugees in my opinion as the people in the picture are carrying luggage and there baby, it looks like they are walking away from home.
It seems as if they are living in poverty as the environment doesn't look healthy. There is damp mud everywhere and the house in the background it looks battered and old. There message is to deliver their emotions and show what is going on in the world.
Content
In the picture you can see that one third is a sunny sky this could be to show that there is still a chance for these people to make it however two thirds are mud and soggy grass which could also show what a struggle it could be and how they will have to battle these conditions. This is a problem in the world that has been around for some time but has still not been resolved.
In the picture the contrast between the blue sky and the man wearing a red coat and also you can see his wife wear a bit of red clearly shows a sense of danger and conflict. This picture is set in Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, maybe in the countryside. In the background I can see an old barn which could be wear the refugees previously stayed at for shelter.
Comment
What I like about the image is how the refugees facial expressions show the struggle in life and also they clearly bring across how they are currently felling which is tired, hungry and weak.
One thing I dislike about the image when I first seen it is how there is a big emotional effect on the audience because there is an infant and after a bit of research I realised that what we thought the man was carrying was a bag was actually a baby involved. I didn't like this because why are they taking a picture with a baby and an infant in poverty but then I realised that it was a good way to make the audience feel sympathy and feel like they need to start doing something to help.
I think I can use this image to inspire me because when i see an advert on TV about this destroying topic i will think twice and try to help more people on the streets.

This is artist research on Pete Muller.
My chosen photographer is Pete Muller
Here are some facts about Pete muller :
Here is one of the many pictures Pete Muller took:
I have attempted to use the 5c’s to analyse this picture.
Context- "UNICEF saves children’s lives, defends their rights, and helps them fulfill their potential. We never give up. UNICEF, for every child. Every two seconds, a child takes his or her first breath in a conflict zone". (This was researched)
Composition- The focus point of this picture is eye level I think he has done this to show that the people in this picture do not a have great power and do not have less than the rest of us and should be looked at in the same way which is as human beings. The photographer has used a shallow depth of field to make the viewer capture all of the people in the picture and to show how small the room actually is. I can see fourteen people including kids in this small area which gives me a clear understanding of how the room is overcrowded.
Connection- In my opinion the picture is about people living in poverty. I think, the environment they are in doesn’t look very pleasant or comfortable. There is no solid flooring and the place they are in looks very overcrowded. From some of their facial expressions I can tell that they are feeling tired hungry and weak which is how I think I would be feeling if I was in the same situation.I don't really like the image but i admire the subject matter they are sharing with the viewer.
Content- In the picture we can see unfortunate little children living in these horrible conditions which is not a nice thing to see. However this is a good thing because people who may see it might feel sympathy for the children who are living in these horrible conditions and might donate to UNICEF to help children who are suffering in the same way. This is a problem in the world that has been around for some time but has still not been resolved. The contrast between dark on the right side and light on the other clearly shows they don’t have simple lighting and have to resort to leaving the door open to let sunlight in. I think the photographer is trying to communicate the message that there are other human beings in the world living in these horrendous conditions.
Comment- What I like about the image is the expression and tone that clearly comes across from there body language to show that they are tired, weak and hungry. One thing I dislike about the image is the big emotional effect it has on us as the audience because there are children involved and that makes us feel great sympathy for their current situation. However this is good because it will make us think twice when we see an advert on tv asking for donations. I think a very less obvious meaning of this picture could be to make us put ourselves in the children’s positions and think about how we would be feeling in their situation. My personal opinion on this picture is that is very good because it captures a certain extent of poverty which needs to be recognised and solved.

Campaign poster ideas to help inspire me.
Out of the 6 pictures this is my favorite because I like the idea of having a bold title that is eye catching. I also like how their are facts and statistics about bullying. However one thing I dislike is how the little girl in the picture is smiling and this would be the only thing I change.
In my opinion this is the worst picture out of the 6 as it is very simple plain and boring. If this was my picture I would add some statistics.

Evaluation
The project theme we started looking at was conflict and the topic after research I decided to choose was bullying which I think was very powerful and strong as in some pictures I was researching could really pull your heart strings and make you feel sympathy for the victims in the pictures, the location of where I took my photos was in school in the areas where people socialize.
The part of the project I enjoyed the most was when we went out for our first shoot and tried to take pictures of what we planned. I enjoyed it the most because it was very funny trying to instruct the models for the picture to go in the right positions and make them pose the right facial expressions to show true meaning.
During this project there are many things that I have picked up on such as developing my skills and images by manipulating my outcomes in Photoshop, with Photoshop I learnt how to apply text to my final poster designs and also manipulate with the lighting and filter of the poster. Another technique I have developed on is the aperature and shutter speed setting on my camera. This helped me to realise how I could improve my images by adjusting these settings so that my images wouldn't look to light or to dark. If you look at my third shoot you will find how I have tried to experiment with shutter speed and aperature.
On my next project the technique I would like to develop further is how to improve my images by finding the correct locations. In order to do this I think I will need to plan in greater detail so that I spend time finding the correct backgrounds and locations which may mean I will need to take the camera home. I have realised to get the best shots I need to be prepared to work in my own time and away from school.
Throughout this project one of the photographers I researched was someone from a charity named unicef who I analysed using the 5c's and after I did some further research at home and found a photographer called Pete Muller
